D1738, 1M91, Hay Fell, 10 September 1971. Staff on the embankment at right look at the class 47 loco and coaches lying on their sides after running through trap points during single line working on the down WCML. The train was the 11-45 Stirling - Sutton Coldfield Motorail service. There were no fatalities and no injuries to the 37 pasengers, and only slight injuries to train crew. The up line was not affected by the accident and single line working was soon instituted over it. The five derailed coaches were recovered and the down line reopened to traffic by 17-00 on the 12th. Recovery of the loco was difficult and took several months. The catch points had been locked for the single line working, but had been mistakenly unlocked before single line working actually finished. D1738 subsequently became 47145 and was scrapped in 2009.
